Disturbing Horizons, by rock star Shawn Phillips, is his first venture into ballet. Although he has over 17 albums and is a quadruple-platinum artist, this work is an entirely new direction to add to his distinguished 25 year career. Orchestrated by Benjamin Lloyd, Disturbing Horizons depicts events in the life of a prince. It is crafted in eight contrasting sections starting with the birth of the Prince and ending with his ascent to the throne.

Pointe of Departure is a summer ballet company based in Cleveland. During the rest of the year, Karen Gabay and Raymond Rodriguez are principal dancers with the San Jose Ballet. These World class artists return to northern Ohio each summer to present a ballet series.

James Braid, one of three family members in the Lakeside Symphony, is celebrating his 21st year as Concertmaster. Over the years he has performed most of the major violin concertos with the Lakeside Symphony, including the Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Brahms as well as some outstanding works outside of the standard repertoire.

He has also collaborated with other members of the orchestra, as soloists – notably with his wife, Colleen (principal violist) in performances of compositions for violin and viola. He and his family always perform as a group for the Candlelight Showcase home tours to benefit the Lakeside Symphony which, this year, will be held on August 14.

Mr. Braid is a longtime member of the Cincinnati Symphony.

The story of the short life and death of Violetta Valery is taken from the drama “Camille” that was adapted by Alexandre Dumas, the younger, from his novel of the same name. It is a tragic story of lost love amid ‘class’ divisions of the time. Its heroine, Violetta, was drawn by Dumas from life: the life of a young Parisienne courtesan by the name of Alphonsine Plessis, who died of consumption in 1847 at the age of twenty-three and is buried in the Montmartre Cemetery in Paris. Verdi completed the opera in 1853 on a libretto by Piave.

Opera Circle is a Cleveland based opera company conceived and directed by Jacek and Dorota Sobieska. It has just completed its tenth season of innovative operatic productions.

This will be Jinjoo Cho’s third appearance with the Lakeside Symphony. An exceptionally talented young protégé, Miss Cho began her studies at the age of six in her native country of Korea. She made her concert debut at the age of eight and went on to win the Choong Nam Philharmonic contest when nine years old. She attended the Aspen Music School in 2000/2001 onn a New Horizon Fellowship.

In 2002, she moved to the United States to study, on scholarship, with Paul Kantor at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In 2006 she was awarded the grand prize in the Montreal International Musical Competition, she was the gold medal winner of the 2005 Stulberg International String Competition and this fall she will be attending the prestigious Curtis School of Music in Philadelphia.

Miss Cho’s appearance this evening is sponsored by a generous gift from Dr. Jim and Betty Jane Young.

Yukiko Sekono is the first prize winner of the 2006 Russian Music International Competition. She has appeared as a soloist and a chamber musician in the US, Europe and her native Japan. She made her debut with the Boston symphony Orchestra at the age of sixteen after winning the BSO’s Youth Concerto Competition, and was a prize winner in the National MTNA Yamaha Competition. She attended Harvard University, appearing as a soloist with the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra, and continued her studies at the Juilliard School. Yuki was a 2002 winner of the Japanese-American Association of New Work Competition and in 2005 won concerto competitions held at SUNY Stony Brook and the New World Symphony. Yuki is currently a doctoral candidate at SUNY Stony Brook, where she studies with Gilbert Kalish on a full scholarship.

This year marks the 43rd anniversary of the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra and the 36th year for Music Director, Robert L. Cronquist.

During his 36 years as Music Director, Mr. Cronquist has endeavored to bring outstanding artists to Lakeside to appear with the orchestra including Metropolitan Opera stars: Jerome Hines, Frank Guarrera and Patrice Munsel. Well known Cleveland artists Eunice Podis, Jean Geis Stell, Clive Lythgoe and Joela Jones have performed with the orchestra as well as international celebrities including “Doc” Severinson, Ferrante and Teicher, Florian Zabach, Carlos Montoya and George Shearing.

Ballet performances have been a regular feature at Lakeside with appearances of the Indianapolis Ballet, the Cleveland-San Jose Ballet and recently the Pointe of Departure Ballet Co. Fully staged operas that Mr. Cronquist has presented include Rigoletto, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Lucia di Lammermoor, Cosi fan Tutti and Tosca. This season opera will return to Hoover Auditorium with a production of La Traviata.

Before becoming the Music Director at Lakeside, Mr. Cronquist conducted the Mansfield Symphony for 22 years. During his tenure in Mansfield he brought many world famous artists to perform with the symphony including Jose Iturbi, Itzak Perlman, Robert Merrill, Joseph Fuchs, Leonard Rose, Joseph Gingold, Eugene Istomin, John Browning and Blanch Thebom.

In addition to conducting the Lakeside Symphony, Mr. Cronquist just completed his 16th season conducting the historic Cleveland Women’s Orchestra, the longest continuously performing women’s orchestra in the country. This orchestra performs a variety of special event programs and an annual spring concert at Severance Hall. During his 16 years as Music Director, he has expanded the orchestra’s concert season and established an endowment to ensure the future of this unique ensemble.
