IN MEMORIAM -- H. BURTON KESTER
H. Burton Kester, distinguished faculty member at William and Mary College and one of the last charter members of the Lakeside Symphony passed away on April 19, 2009. As a much sought after professional woodwind performer for over 60 years, Mr. Kester was a member of the National Gallery Orchestra, the Baltimore Theater Orchestra and the Norfolk Symphony (now the Virginia Symphony). In the mid-1960s he became principal bassoonist of the Lakeside Symphony and remained an orchestra member for over 40 years. At William and Mary for 34 years, Mr. Kester taught all woodwind instruments and led many woodwind ensembles. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a bandsman during the Korean Conflict and later toured the country with the National Company of "Fiddler on the Roof", performing over 400 shows in virtually every state in the Union. He served Lakeside not only as an orchestra member but also as personnel manager and, for a number of years, conductor of a youth orchestra. A Lakeside Symphony Endowment Fund has been established in his name.

For many years Vienna was, and remains today, the cultural center of Europe. During the late 18th century, its location and multi-ethnic population provided fertile ground for classical music to develop and thrive. Many, if not most, central European musicians and composers either studied or worked in Vienna at some time. The period after 1800 was an especially exciting time to be in Vienna. The Austrian nobility had significant wealth to spend; it was considered to be a noble act to endow the composition of a piece of music; and there was a tradition in composition nourished by the influences from different central European regions and Italy. The Strauss family dominated Viennese society from Johann Strauss, Sr. (1804-1849) through Johann Strauss, Jr., and brothers Joseph and Eduard. They were followed by Richard Strauss (no relation) and Oscar Straus who carried the operetta tradition well into the 20th century. The Strauss waltzes are unsurpassed in charm, polish and real musical worth, and the operettas and other works are equal to the waltzes in their appeal.

Their daughter, Allison, has been a member of the cello section since high school, and her husband, Karl, is a member of the bass section. They both currently play in the Louisville Symphony. For the past 35 years, Mr. Braid has also been a member of the Cincinnati Symphony and for the past 20 years he has served on the faculty of the Cincinnati School for the Creative and Performing Arts. Founded in 1995 by Dorota Sobieska and Jacek Sobieski, OPERA CIRCLE presents live performances of operatic masterpieces for the enjoyment of the general public in Cleveland. The innovative format of Opera Circle fosters community involvement and encourages each individual involved in the creative process to actively participate. Opera Circle serves the wide public by maintaining a fine balance of two directions: Opera Circle Classics Series and Open Forum Opera. The former includes traditionally produced opera oftentimes presented with Cleveland Women's Orchestra at the Bohemian National Hall, a miniature opera house similar to those in Prague. The latter, presented at non-standard locations, takes beautiful music and phrasing as the springboard to creating unique and fascinating productions that challenge the traditional restrictive view of the genre.
